What is HbA1C?

Hemoglobin A1c is a measure of how much glucose is bound to red blood cells. Because red blood cells live for about 3 months, an A1c test provides a 90-day average of your blood sugar levels.

However, "percentages" are abstract. Patients who use finger-prick glucometers are used to seeing their blood sugar in mg/dL (e.g., a fasting reading of 110 mg/dL). This tool bridges that gap by converting the 3-month A1c percentage into an "estimated average glucose" (eAG) using the formula established by the ADAG (A1c-Derived Average Glucose) study.

Diagnostic Thresholds

Normal: Below 5.7%
Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%
Diabetes: 6.5% or higher
